5/7 Blog #6 More Details

This week of work has resulted in what I believe to be the most progress I have made within a single week, in addition to the best final product I have created. I returned to my most trusted source, Dan Beardshaw. This is the video from Beardshaw I watched to help me out this week.

This video focuses on a similar premise to the one I have been attempting so far, which is creating an outline and constructing the face’s features. However, this method of outlining (though very similar to my old method), is a tiny bit different. This method involves creating a rectangular grid rather than a circular outline to identify where all facial features belong. The differences in the outline pretty much end there. The main differences in the features I drew here are simply that they are a lot more detailed. The eyes are fully drawn with pupils and whatnot. The hairline is drawn with a different style, though the level of detail remains the same since there really isn’t much to work with as far as hairlines go. The nose now includes more distinct curves and nostrils. The ears contain markings for their inner features (I’ll come back to this later, but this is the part I really need to improve on). The lips are more realistically shaped instead of just being a big oval. Lastly, the shape of the jawline is more curved. My drawing is attached below. Please see my previous blog post for my less detailed drawing. I think that what I am drawing now is a huge improvement over just last week. This method of drawing with more details, though a lot more time-consuming, results in a much better final product. Overall, I think I am a lot more satisfied with how the drawing turns out using this method and will continue to utilize it.

So, where have I gotten better, and what still needs work? Honestly, just about everything has improved. (That doesn’t mean I have no remaining room for improvement. I have a lot of work to do.) Just about all the facial features look significantly better with this additional layer of detail. I do think that I really need to work on making ears look better though. I found that part to be very tricky, and I want to try improving with that going forward. I’ll focus on improving how the ears look in my future drawings, and I will also experiment with other face models (female, older, younger, etc.) Thanks for reading!

  2. Wow! Compared to you previous posts, you are making quite a bit of progress! The face looks really good considering it is just a line drawing! I look forward to seeing more in the future!

  3. Whoa the ears look really good! I didn't realize before I saw them just how detailed they would have to be! Nice work this week!
