5/21 Blog #8 Grids Bad
Remember last week? I remember last week. I said that any readers of the blog could send in pictures of their face and I’d draw their face as best I could. Well turns out, “as best I could” was pretty awful. I tried drawing Ethan but I couldn’t seem to get it to look any good. I’ve gotten so used to my grid of lines for telling me where all features go, that I find this to be rather difficult. A generic grid doesn’t work all the time, since different people have different facial proportions. There is a way to work around this and adjust the grid for variances in proportions, but I honestly found this way too difficult.
Honestly, the grid technique I use for drawing faces is something I’ve almost entirely mastered. I can use this technique very well to draw good faces. However, I find it difficult to adapt this technique for faces that come from real people, rather than my imagination. That being said, I needed something to draw that I could do in a more freestyle fashion, since I was getting kinda sick of grid after grid. I remembered drawing the main character from the video game Hollow Knight around the start of this project. I decided to do an interpretation of that character's brother. The name of the character I drew is the Hollow Knight. Ironically, the guy who got the game named after him isn't the protagonist. The game uses a rather simplistic art style, so it’s not too difficult to mimic. I definitely had trouble with drawing the Hollow Knight, since his design is the pretty complex by this game's standards. It was really refreshing to draw something other than a face on a grid at this point. I had a lot of fun with this drawing and I'm happy with how it turned out.
I really enjoyed making this, since it reminded me of a game I have a strong connection to. I watched a video around the first couple weeks of this project that had the advice to draw things you care about, so that your motivation to create those drawings will be greater. Hollow Knight is something I’ve spent a good deal of time on, going so far as to achieve full completion in the game. (Which took an ungodly amount of time and effort, you have no idea.) I listened to some of the game’s music while drawing, and honestly, a game about cartoon bugs has no right to have a soundtrack this good. Now that my ramblings are over, I hope you all enjoyed reading this blog post and any previous posts I have made. I’ve had a great time making these posts and the drawings that go with them. Best wishes, everyone!

Note for Mr. Perlman and Mr. Mcdaniels: I commented on the blogs of Nathan Antonio, Hailey Alt, and Noah Okenquist.
ReplyDeleteThat drawing looks great! I hope you continue to draw and improve in the future!
ReplyDeleteReally cool drawing! I like the stance and overall feel. Nice work!
ReplyDeleteHagan - Since the drawing you posted looks pretty good, I think it would be fair to say Ethan's face would have looked fine. Good job!
